Classification

Classification is simply a structure for competition. Not unlike wrestling, boxing and weightlifting, where athletes are categorized by weight classes, athletes with disabilities are grouped in classes defined by the degree of function presented by the disability.

Complete Classification Information

International classification status may be granted if the following criteria are fulfilled:

  • The competition is approved/sanctioned by IPC/IPC Swimming
  • The competition has open entry or has established qualification crieteria approved by IPC Swimming (i.e. Paralympic Games, World Championships, Regional Championships)
  • All classifiers conducting classification(s) are appointed by IPC Swimming.

In effect from 1 January 2009 the classification data will be migrated in accordance with the Classification Code. The classification data migration is outlined here.  The athletes' register per NPC will be updated accordingly.
