Classification
Classification is simply a structure for competition. Not unlike wrestling, boxing and weightlifting, where athletes are categorized by weight classes, athletes with disabilities are grouped in classes defined by the degree of function presented by the disability.
Complete Classification Information
International classification status may be granted if the following criteria are fulfilled:
- The competition is approved/sanctioned by IPC/IPC Swimming
- The competition has open entry or has established qualification crieteria approved by IPC Swimming (i.e. Paralympic Games, World Championships, Regional Championships)
- All classifiers conducting classification(s) are appointed by IPC Swimming.
In effect from 1 January 2009 the classification data will be migrated in accordance with the Classification Code. The classification data migration is outlined here. The athletes' register per NPC will be updated accordingly.
NPCs requesting international classification for their swimmers have to send the Medical Data Submission Form (below) with the relevant medical documentation in English min. 4 weeks before the competition start. Only athletes registered and licensed can be classified.
NPCs requesting classification review have to complete the appropriate form (below) and send it at least 3 months in advance to IPC Swimming.

Athletes with a visual impairment need to present themselves for classification at competitions and bring all relevant medical documentation with them. Criteria for international classification outlined above is valid for classification of athletes with a visual impairment as well. NPCs requesting classification, review or protesting their athletes' sport class have to complete the forms published above and send them to IPC Swimming office.
