World Championships Sees World Records

The second day of the 2009 International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Swimming World Championships 25m continued the recording-setting trend by athletes in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Germany’s Kirsten Bruhn who is also a Paralympian Ambassador of the IPC, set a World record in the Women’s 100m Backstroke (S7) with her time of 1:21.72. Bruhn was followed by USA’s Cortney Jordan and Australia’s Katrina Porter respectively. In the Men’s 100m Backstroke (S7), Croatia’s Mihovil Spanja also set a World record with his time of 1:11.14. Japan’s Daisuke Ejima came in second, with New Zealand’s Michael Ardern coming in third.

In the Women’s 100m Breaststroke (SB13), Australia’s Prudence Watt set a World record with her time of 1:20.31. Watt was followed by Spanish athletes Begona Curero Sastre and Marta Maria Gomez Batelli respectively. A World record was also set in the Men’s 100m Breaststroke (SB13) from Daniel Sharp (NZL) for his finishing at 1:06.34. Sharp was followed by Sergey Punko (RUS) and Edgard Quiros Baltanas (ESP) respectively.

Russian athlete Anastasia Diodorova set a World record in the Women’s 50m Butterfly (S6) with her time of 38.86s. Diodorova was followed by USA’s Casey Johnson and Great Britain’s Natalie Jones respectively. For the Men’s 50m Butterfly (S5), Brazil’s Daniel De Faria also set a World record with his time of 34.02s. Spain’s Ricardo Ten Argiles came in second place, followed by New Zealand’s Cameron Leslie in third.

World records were also set in the Men and Women’s 50m Freestyle event (S11) by Russia’s Konstantin Tychkov and Switzerland’s Chantel Cavin respectively.

The World Championships are taking place through 5 December 2009 in the Brazilian city, with over 260 athletes from 31 different countries participating in the IPC’s first Short Course World Championships in Swimming. The event is organized by the RIO2009 Organizing Committee and sanctioned by the Brazilian National Paralympic Committee and the IPC. The mascot for Rio 2009 is Otto, the swimming octopus and will undoubtedly make the Championships even more memorable for all visitors at the event.
